In general, coughing is merely a mechanism of the body to clear the throat from phlegm, dust particles and other irritants. But if you end up coughing all the time, it means there is a problem. Continual coughing may indicate the presence of a respiratory tract infection. You should be aware of other symptoms like fever and pain as well.

While you should definitely visit your physician, here are some natural and safe ways to gain some control over your coughing.

Natural ways to deal with cough

1. Honey: This has been used to comfort a sore throat for centuries. According to a study published in 2007, plain honey can perform better than some over-the-counter cough suppressants. Take 1 tablespoon of honey thrice a day in order to gain control over the coughing. If you want a good night’s sleep, take 2 tablespoons before going to bed.


2. Ginger: This household ingredient has been used in Ayurveda for centuries. It works as an expectorant by breaking up and getting rid of mucus from the throat and lungs. Ginger can also help relieve throat pain which often accompanies coughing. Just chew on sliced ginger thrice a day. You can add some honey to make it easier to eat.


3. Peppermint: The menthol present in peppermint has a soothing effect while reducing mucus congestion in the throat. Just have peppermint tea or take steam inhalation with a few drops of peppermint oil. It will help control you’re coughing.

4. Turmeric: The curcumin present in it has potent antibacterial properties. It acts against inflammation in the throat and relieves mucus congestion. Put half teaspoon of turmeric powder in 1 cup of warm milk. Drink it twice a day to get relief.


5. Garlic: Garlic is a potent antimicrobial and expectorant which makes it a valuable home ingredient to fight cough. Lightly fry a few cloves of garlic with a little ghee. Eat it while the dish is warm. It will help bring relief to your tired throat.


6. Pineapple: Few people know how effective a pineapple is in tackling cough. This fruit has a naturally occurring enzyme called Bromelain. It can help suppress cough by loosening the mucus and phlegm in your throat.
